How "observed" holiday dates work
When a federal holiday lands on a weekend, the closure moves: Saturday → the Friday before, Sunday → the Monday after. That's why the stock market and USPS close on Friday, July 3, 2026 (July 4 is a Saturday) and on Monday, July 5, 2027 (July 4 is a Sunday). One exception worth knowing: the Federal Reserve doesn't shift Saturday holidays, so many bank branches stay open on those Fridays.

One nuance: the Federal Reserve does not shift Saturday holidays, so many bank branches stay open that Friday.

USPS delivers Monday through Saturday except on the 11 federal holidays, when post offices close and regular mail pauses (only Priority Mail Express delivers). UPS and FedEx observe fewer holidays — they run on MLK Day, Presidents Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
›Is Walmart open on Christmas?
No. Walmart closes only two days a year: Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve it typically closes early, around 6 p.m. CVS is the usual fallback — most locations stay open on Christmas, though pharmacy counters are often closed.

Almost all major retailers — Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot — are closed on Thanksgiving, along with banks, USPS and the stock market. Most CVS stores stay open, many Starbucks run shortened hours, and McDonald's varies by franchisee.
