The 11 federal holidays plus Good Friday, Easter, Black Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

How "observed" holiday dates work

When a federal holiday lands on a weekend, the closure moves: Saturday โ†’ the Friday before, Sunday โ†’ the Monday after. That's why the stock market and USPS close on Friday, July 3, 2026 (July 4 is a Saturday) and on Monday, July 5, 2027 (July 4 is a Sunday). One exception worth knowing: the Federal Reserve doesn't shift Saturday holidays, so many bank branches stay open on those Fridays.

Frequently asked questions

โ€บIs the stock market open today?

The NYSE and Nasdaq trade Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, except on about 10 market holidays a year (including Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday). The live panel at the top of this page checks today's date against the full 2026โ€“2027 market calendar, including 1:00 p.m. ET early-close sessions.

โ€บAre banks open today?

Banks follow the Federal Reserve schedule: they close on all 11 federal holidays and on Sundays, with limited Saturday hours at many branches. They stay open on non-federal days like Good Friday and Black Friday. Today's status is shown live at the top of this page.

โ€บIs the stock market open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?

Yes โ€” this surprises many people. The NYSE and Nasdaq trade normally on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. Banks and the bond market are closed those days, but the stock market is open.

โ€บWhat are the US federal holidays in 2026?

The 11 federal holidays in 2026: New Year's Day (Jan 1), MLK Day (Jan 19), Presidents Day (Feb 16), Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (Jun 19), Independence Day (Jul 4, observed Fri Jul 3), Labor Day (Sep 7), Columbus Day (Oct 12), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Thanksgiving (Nov 26) and Christmas (Dec 25).

โ€บWhat does an 'observed' holiday mean?

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday. Example: July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, so the market, USPS and federal offices close on Friday, July 3, 2026. One nuance: the Federal Reserve does not shift Saturday holidays, so many bank branches stay open that Friday.

โ€บDoes mail run today? Is USPS delivering?

USPS delivers Monday through Saturday except on the 11 federal holidays, when post offices close and regular mail pauses (only Priority Mail Express delivers). UPS and FedEx observe fewer holidays โ€” they run on MLK Day, Presidents Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

โ€บIs Walmart open on Christmas?

No. Walmart closes only two days a year: Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve it typically closes early, around 6 p.m. CVS is the usual fallback โ€” most locations stay open on Christmas, though pharmacy counters are often closed.

โ€บIs anything open on Thanksgiving?

Almost all major retailers โ€” Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot โ€” are closed on Thanksgiving, along with banks, USPS and the stock market. Most CVS stores stay open, many Starbucks run shortened hours, and McDonald's varies by franchisee.
